Arrest Made In State Trooper Dragging

SPRINGFIELD (WBZ) ― State police arrested a Springfield man accused of dragging a State trooper during a traffic stop late Thursday night.

The driver, Richard J. Jones, has been charged with assault and battery on a police officer and other assault and motor vehicle charges.

Police say Trooper Amy Waterman was driving along Page Boulevard around 11 p.m. when she spotted a 1994 Volvo S40 with a license plate registered to a different vehicle. After pulling him over, she walked up to the Volvo and asked Jones to see his license and registration. Police said Jones was unable to produce either document so Trooper Waterman asked him to step out of the vehicle.

Police said Waterman opened the car's door and reached in to guide Jones out when he suddenly accelerated down the road. Waterman, who was grasping the door and part of the frame, didn't let go for fear she would fall to the ground and be run over, police said. So she kept ordering the driver to stop the car, which he didn't do, police said.

Waterman eventually fell to the ground. She suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK. After getting back into her cruiser, Waterman found the Volvo a short distance away parked in a driveway on Fordham Street.

Once other officers arrived, police say they found the vehicle's passenger crouching behind a shed. They arrested him and charged him with disturbing the peace. They then were able to identify Jones as the driver of the car and arrested him Friday at a home on Grover Street.

In addition to assault and battery charges, Jones also faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, failing to stop for police and attaching plates.
