Local Police Install Surveillance Cameras
SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - Holyoke police has them up and running, and now the Springfield Police Department wants to get them going in their city as well. We're talking about surveillance cameras and their use as a crime fighting tool. Police Chief Paula Meara has brought her case to the Springfield City Council. But Springfield does not own their utility poles, so rather than pay a utility company fees month to month, Springfield police have a plan to build their own infrastructure. This is why it will cost the "City of Homes considerably more to install the cameras than it did in Holyoke. The price tag, a cost of $800,000 dollars to get the project started. Springfield's Business Improvement District has pledged $50,000. Chief Meara says the department has $200,000 allocated for the cameras. They are hoping the remaining $550,000 needed will come from grants, public or private collaboration and possibly, money seized from drug raids by the police department.
