SPRINGFIELD - Darryl J. Daniels was playing blackjack at Mohegan Sun casino Monday when his luck ran out.

Seated at the table, Daniels 23, of 91 Lowell St., was tapped on the shoulder by Springfield detectives and told he was under arrest for the June 16 shooting death of Jamile R. Guest.

Capt. Robert T. McFarlin said Daniels was placed in custody just after 3:30 p.m. by Springfield police along with members of the Massachusetts and Connecticut state police and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Daniels was charged with murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, McFarlin said. He was being held overnight in Connecticut on a fugitive from justice warrant while Massachusetts begins extradition proceedings, McFarlin said.

Guest was gunned down at 2:15 a.m. on June 16 as he walked out of the Honeyland Farms convenience store at 806 Main St.

His assailant was waiting for him in the parking lot and fired several times. Guest was hit once and tried to flee, but collapsed at Main and Central streets. He died later at Baystate Medical Center.

Daniels was identified as a suspect and police obtained an arrest warrant for him last week, McFarlin said.

Law enforcement tracked him to the casino in Uncasville, Conn., and moved in to make the arrest, he said.

McFarlin said Guest was not shot at random but had been targeted in retaliation for an earlier shooting. He declined to elaborate.

McFarlin said the case is still open and police are investigating to see if other suspects are involved.

Springfield has had six homicides this year. Including Daniels, Springfield police have made arrests in five of the six cases, although charges were dropped in one case when it was ruled self-defense.
