SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield police department's new unit to combat domestic violence has a familiar ring to it. Springfield now has its own "Special Victims Unit."
"I think it is cutting edge, what the Springfield police department is doing" said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.
Twelve officers, one supervisor, and two advocates will be dedicated to this unit. They will be responsible for the investigation of rapes, domestic assaults, sexual crimes, cyber crimes, and the sex offender registry.
The unit will be commanded by Lt. Cheryl Claprood.
"We can help you from the start of getting an emergency restraining order, to further help as far as shelters if the kids need anything special. We are all in one place" she said.
Commissioner William Fitchet said staggering statistics speak for themselves. "To show the importance of this bureau, there have been over 70 domestic cases since September 21 to September 27. Officers on the street need this unit to combat domestic issues and homicides" said Fitchet.
Many Springfield residents said it is about time police set up a unit like this.
