SOUTHBOROUGH -
A local man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of possessing and intending to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, said U.S. Department of Justice officials.
Alexander I. Acher, 29, is being held near Atlanta until today's 3:30 p.m. detention hearing before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, said Department of Justice spokesman Patrick Crosby.
Acher, with four members of a Mexican-American street gang called the "South Side Myfas," was arrested after an undercover operation Monday by FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Monster Car Audio in Lawrenceville, Ga.
U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias said the men were using the audio business to store and distribute cocaine.
An undercover FBI agent sold more than five kilograms of cocaine to Acher, Ricardo Larios-Trujillo, 33, Ramon Cortez, 20, and Homer Larios, 34, of Lawrenceville; and Rigoberto Delgao-Orozco, 30, of Buford, Ga., officials allege.
The FBI also seized $130,000 in cash from the group during the arrests.
Acher is involved with the Monster Car Audio business, at 134 South Clayton St., Lawrenceville, Crosby said, though he did not specify how.
The South Side Myfas street gang originated in Bakersfield, Calif., and is a subset of the Surenos gang, one of the oldest, largest and most violent Mexican-American street gangs in the country, said Nahmias.
The men are being charged in a two-count indictment for conspiring to possess with an intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, and possession with the intent to distribute.
Acher attended Algonquin Regional High School between 1994 and 1998, though he did not graduate, school officials said yesterday.
He is listed in a database as having a Pinecone Lane address in Southborough.
A woman who answered the phone there yesterday said Acher was not at home.
