SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) - A judge has ordered a South Windsor man held on $1 million on charges of beating his mother with a baseball bat on the family's front lawn, fracturing her skull and breaking both arms.
Mark Schneider was arraigned Tuesday in his hospital room in Manchester Memorial Hospital's psychiatric unit, where he was admitted after he was booked at the police station Monday.
Authorities say they do not know what led to the attack, but that Schneider had been under professional care and had been prescribed anti-psychotic medications.
His mother's injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Schneider, a recent Yale University graduate, was deemed a teenage prodigy when he and his brother won a $100,000 science prize while he was in high school.
He is charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 9.
