SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. --
Two deputies needed medical attention after a violent scuffle with a man they say tried to evade arrest.
Deputies were called to the Skate Palace just after midnight Monday by a woman who said that the man had been fighting with other people. As the deputies arrived, the man drove off in a white truck.
The deputies tried to stop the truck, but the man took off toward Chesnee on Highway 221 before turning off on Mt. Pleasant Road. The deputies pursued the car into the Lakeview Manor subdivision. When the man got out of his truck, the deputy told him to get on the ground.
The man refused and ran toward a house that is located on Thurgood Marshall Street. It was later learned that the house was the man's residence.
Deputies caught up with the man at the door of the home. As they struggled with him, the door broke and the man and a deputy fell into the home. Deputies said that the man continued to fight with them, hitting one with his fist and a vase and knocking him out, and hitting the other with a chair.
The deputies called for backup, and when the house was searched, they found the man in a closet. After another brief struggle, the man was handcuffed and taken to jail.
Deputies identified the man as 18-year-old Robert Lee Sims. Sims is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 230 lbs. He has several prior convictions, according to jail records.
One deputy was treated for hand injuries and the other for a head injury.
Sims is charged with failure to stop for a blue light, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
