Somerset -
Michael Vandenburgh, 39, of 119 Niagara St., Westport, is in police custody after officers surprised the accused burglar inside a house at 1141 Riverside Ave. at approximately 10 a.m. Friday morning.
"We got a call that there was a suspicious party knocking on the door of the house," said Somerset Police Chief Joseph Ferreira.
Police surrounded the house and kicked down a side door after discovering a broken basement window.
"We usually don't catch them inside the house," Ferreira said. "He was running around in there like a caged rat."
Ferreira said Vandenburgh had ransacked the house.
"He told us he was looking for cash or gold to pawn," Ferreira said.
Ferreira said there was one aspect that stood out to him to Friday morning's arrest. Vandenburgh's car was parked on the street next to the house.
"He had a 'Jesus is Lord,' bumper sticker," Ferreira said.
Vandenburgh is charged with breaking and entering into a building in the daytime for a felony and attempting to commit a crime.
