NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) A 46-year-old girls' softball coach, who police say planned to elope to New Mexico with one of his 15-year-old players, has been charged with rape.
Randall Rogers of Dartmouth was ordered held Tuesday on $10,000 cash bail by a New Bedford District Court judge after pleading innocent at his arraignment on three counts of statutory rape. Rogers tried to get the bail reduced at a hearing in superior court on Wednesday, but the request was denied.
Prosecutors said that Rogers, who allegedly considered himself ''engaged'' to the girl, seemed unconcerned when he was arrested Tuesday.
''At the time of his arrest, Mr. Rogers still claimed his love for the child and regardless of what society thinks, he still wants to marry her,'' a police press release said.
Rogers' wife of 20 years died in April at age 36 after she had an asthma attack while in New Mexico to help some friends move, according to Rogers's sister, Christina Hart.
''He's been very distraught over his wife's death,'' Hart told the Boston Herald. ''It's deep. He blames himself for letting her go.''
Rogers has three children. Two were home Wednesday, but they declined comment and slammed the door on reporters, The Standard-Times of New Bedford reported.
Police said Rogers began dating the victim in August. The two had sex during the last four months, before one of the girl's family members told police.
Assistant District Attorney Raymond Veary Jr. told the court that Rogers gave the girl a diamond engagement ring and the two were planning to leave for the Southwest, where Rogers' brother lives.
Rogers coached an independent 14-and-under traveling softball team called the Mass Executioners, according to The Standard-Times. The team was unaffiliated with any town league.
''At the time of his arrest, Mr. Rogers still claimed his love for the child and regardless of what society thinks, he still wants to marry her,'' a police press release said.
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for an underage teen bride, won't you be mine, won't you be mine, won't you be my underage teen bride!"
So let me get this straight... A 46 year old man, or pedophile shall I say, considered himself 'engaged' to the to the 15 year old girl, seemed unconcerned when he was arrested, and still claimed his love for the child and regardless of what society thinks. And he still wants to marry her  Because his 36 year old wife died of an asthma attack thats a reason to go victimize a teenager. WTF . What a trade in, a 36 year old for a 15 year old? What a society we live in...
When I was in little league, as long as you started the year at the perscribed age, you could finish out the season. So I'm betting she started the year at 14+ and then turned 15.
Jeepers creepers...I didn't even knwo there was such a thing as non affiliated softball tearms....that seems like a freaking pedo playground....
I was on a team that wasn't connected to a specific town team. I was in a travel league and yes we had the town name, but the town didn't endorse us - per say.
I guess I never understood it because I was always the young one on the team, stupid September birthday....
