Shy Boy Lured By Girl, Beaten By Others
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBS) ― A shy New Jersey high school student thought he'd finally gotten a date. But prosecutors say his classmates had actually set him up -- just so they could ambush him.
The cruel prank is the talk of Morristown.
Students at Morristown High School, like young people everywhere, are concerned with things like dating and being popular. Police said one young man here thought he finally got a date with a young lady from the school. Instead, the Morris County prosecutor said he was set up.
"This young man was lured by a female expecting to go on a date. In your adolescent life when you're expecting these things you don't actually expect to be lured into a trap where you're going to be beaten up," District Attorney Robert Bianchi said. "It's obviously something we take very seriously."
The teenage girl told the teenage boy to take her to the Headquarters Plaza Mall, and when they went in to the garage and she said she had to step out for a moment, two of their classmates, police said, got in and hit him. A juvenile detention facility is where the two boys and, later, the girl have spent the past couple of nights, under arrest. Bianchi called it bullying. The lawyer for one of the boys said, hold on a second.
"This case is simply another example of the age-old situation of young men competing for the attentions of a young woman," Edward D'Alessandro Jr. said.
The judge noted that the young man was not seriously hurt, but he said he was concerned about young people acting in concert, and, even thinking about using violence. So to send a message, he ordered them back in to jail this weekend. They are to be released Monday and allowed only to go to school. After that, they're under house arrest until they come back to court --- next month.
Police said they're looking for a third boy who got into the victim's car and drove it to another part of the garage.
