The Shreveport Police Department is always searching for men and women who are able to meet the challenge of becoming one of 'Shreveport's Finest'.

Applications for Police Officer / Jailer I and Police Communications Officer will be continuously accepted.

Applicants must meet the following:

Minimum Requirements:

Must be a U.S. citizen
Must be at least 21 years old to take the State Civil Service Exam. There is no maximum age limit
Must have 30 college hours or sign a contract agreeing to acquire 30 hours of college during the first five years of employment. (For Police Officers only).
Must have a valid driver's license, be in general good health, pass an extensive background check, have no felony convictions, and be of good moral character

Civil Service Examinations

State Civil Service examinations for the position of police officer are offered by the Shreveport Police Department and other police agencies throughout Louisiana. Test scores are transferable and are valid for up to 18 months. Applicants for Communications Officer and Jailer must test in Shreveport. Information regarding testing dates and locations are available by calling the State Civil Service Hotline at (225)925.4567.

To be considered for employment, applicants must successfully complete all of the following:

Civil Service Examination
Extensive background investigation
Applicant Review Board (police applicants only)
Polygraph examination
Psychological examination
Complete medical examination
Physical fitness assessment (police applicants only)
Drug screen
POST Certified Police Officers

Law enforcement officers who are already certified by the Police Officers Standard Training (POST) Council may go to work immediately without having to attend the first eight weeks of POST training at the Shreveport Police Academy. The condition of employment is subject to the normal hiring process and procedures for new hire applicants seeking employment with the Shreveport Police Department. In addition, the POST certified officer's certifications and qualifications will be reviewed by the Academy Director to ensure the applicant meets minimum standards of the Shreveport Police Department.

Officers who are interested in applying must have an active civil service test score and successfully complete the departmental selection process before being hired.

If selected, officers go to work immediately with a Field Training Officer. They will be reassigned to the Police Academy at a later time to complete training in departmental procedures.

Police officers - $2,029 per month while attending Police Academy. Upon completion of academy, salary increases to $2,529 per month. After one year, officers receive an additional $300 per month in State Supplemental Pay.

Jailer - $2,182 per month

Communications Officer - $2,537 per month
