Waterville Police Say Man Entered House Seeking Man, Police Say

WATERVILLE, Maine -- A man accused of firing a shotgun in front of a family in their Waterville home was arrested overnight.

Several people called 911 at about 4:15 a.m. to report several gunshots fired on Kennebec Street.

Waterville police identified the armed man as Jermaine M. Seawright, 27, of Oakland, and said an officer who responded to the scene held Seawright at gunpoint until backup arrived to assist in the arrest.

Police said Seawright entered the home looking for a man with whom he allegedly had a fight at a bar earlier in the night. Seawright suffered a wound on his right hand in the process of allegedly breaking into the home, police said.

Investigators said Seawright fired two slugs from a 12-gauge shotgun through the front door of the house, inside which were a man, woman and four children under the age of 10.

According to police, the slugs fired penetrated the metal front door, deflected onto several walls inside the house and sliced through a back wall of the house.

"It was a miracle that no one inside the home was seriously injured or killed," Waterville Deputy Police Chief Charles Rumsey said. "There is no question in my mind that if the officers had not arrived when they did, this incident would have had a much more tragic conclusion."

Police said they also found a sawed-off barrel and a sawed-off stock in the area.

Seawright's bail was set at more than $1 million on felony burglary, fun, threatening and other charges. He remains held at the Kennebec County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 14.

If you have information regarding this investigation, contact Waterville police Detective Daniel Goss by dialing 207-680-4700.
