State police are responding to a report of a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive, school officials said.
Police are reporting a number of injured parties. The nature of their injuries is not clear.
State police sources said one shooter is dead. Earlier reports of a second shooter are unconfirmed.
Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds," police said.
Groups of students - some crying, some holding hands - were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., parents said.
Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.
A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school. Area hospitals have been alerted.

UPDATE: The Associated Press citing officials, says a gunman has been killed after a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
The AP reports the anonymous official said the gunman was armed with two weapons.
The Danbury News-Times also reports sources say the Sandy Hook School principal was killed in the Newtown shooting.
NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown were evacuated form the school this morning after a reported shooting.
There is no confirmation of fatalities by police. Three people have been taken to Danbury Hospital, a hospital official said.
The school is located at 12 Dickinson Drive. Newtown emergency officials are telling parents to stay by their phone, not to go to the school.
A witness told News 8 she saw two children, one had a bloody face, the other with a hand injury.

CNN just changed the numbers to 10 adults / 10 children.

One child interviewed, said a female teacher grabbed him and another student and barricaded them in classroom while someone tried to kick down the door.

The bodies in Columbine weren't even cold yet and there were people who wanted the American people to "forgive" the shooters. It will happen in this case too.....but it won't be for me or anyone on this earth to forgive a monster like this. BURN IN HELL LANZA!!!
