Phoenix police mourned the death Saturday of an officer killed in the line of duty.
Shane Figueroa died Saturday morning when a pickup ran into his car near 19th Avenue and Roeser Road. He was 25.
Figueroa is survived by his wife and a 3-month-old child. His father is a retireded Phoenix police officer, officials said.
"This is a tragedy, not just for us,” Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris said. “We will do everything we possibly can to assist his family.” Figueroa was apparently driving northbound around 1:30 p.m. when a white pickup struck him going the opposite direction. He was responding to a shooting-related call, officials said.
Witness and evidence reports indicate the white truck turned left into Figueroa's vehicle, said Sgt. Andy Hill, a Phoenix police spokesman.
Figueroa was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. A passenger in the suspect vehicle was seriously injured.
A suspect, Jose V. Gonzales, 50, has been arrested and booked on charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault.
Officials said Gonzales had four warrants out under another name, including at least one for DUI.
Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Harris said four Phoenix police officers have died this month, either from illness or in the line of duty.
