They interviewed the kid's for the channel 4 news last night:

Ben Kerns says his son was framed by another teen-ager following a dispute over a girl. Kerns also revealed to The Boston Globe that his son had minor run-ins with the law in the past and had spent time this past summer at a psychiatric facility. But Kerns said his son was "really trying to turn his life around." Kerns even went so far as to videotape an interview with his son after his arrest last month. On the tape, aired on T-V stations last night, Tobin Kerns says, "when you are a good person, things will work out for you."

Turning his life around by planning a school massacre? The kid was setting off improvised explosives in the woods behind his house. I'd hate to see what he was like before he started ' trying to turn his life around'.
