Job Announcement:
The Position
Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; control traffic flow and enforce state and local regulations; perform investigative work; participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs and do related police work as assigned. Duties and hours will vary with assignments.

Examination & Selection Process

Will consist of the following independent parts:

LATERAL TRANSFER APPLICANTS:

a) Submit a completed City of San Mateo
employment application

b) Response to Supplemental
Questionnaire

OR

ACADEMY GRADUATE APPLICANTS:

a) Submit a completed City of San Mateo
employment application

b) Response to Supplemental
Questionnaire

c) Your POST approved basic
academy certificate

OR

ACADEMY ATTENDEE APPLICANTS:

a) Submit a completed City of San Mateo
employment application

b) Response to Supplemental
Questionnaire

c) Proof of current enrollment in a POST
Basic Academy as a "non-affiliate of at
least 800 hours.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Upon meeting the minimum requirements for this position (in any of the 3 categories listed) the written examination will be waived and candidates are placed on an Eligible List.

Once placed on an Eligible List, and at time a vacancy needs to be filled, the Police Department will mail candidates a Personal History Statement for completion. Based on a review of the completed Personal History Statement, candidates may be scheduled for a departmental interview.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Before a conditional employment offer is made, candidates must take a polygraph examination. If successful, candidates are then required to successfully pass a psychological, medical examination including a stress agility assessment, a drug screen, personal interviews, background investigation, fingerprinting, and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work in the United States. The process will end with the Police Chief's interview. The City's standards must be met before the final appointment is made. The Chief of Police or her designee will make final appointment.

NOTE: The City of San Mateo reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the examination process.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The City of San Mateo offers an excellent compensation package:

Salary: $5,109.87 - $6,089.20 per month plus 9% City paid Public
Employees" Retirement System (PERS).

Pool Money: Additional $564.51per month tto be used toward health
insurance or salary.

Deferred Comp: City paid 3.4% contribution into
401 (a)(h) eligible after 18 months.

Insurance: A choice of medical plans, plus $ 160 per month City paid
contribution toward medical plan. City paid dental, vision, and life insurance premiums.

Vacation: 11-25 working days annual vacation,
depending on length of service (based on 8 hour days)

Leaves: 12 days per year earned; extended sick leave and family

Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year

Programs: Credit Union, Employee Assistance Program, & Tuition
Reimbursement
Bilingual
Differential: $195.00 per month (if applicable)

Retirement: Enrollment in the Public Employees Retirement System
3% @ 50 with 9% employee contribution paid by the City with one year final compensation.

Unit: This classification falls within an employee bargaining unit,
employees of which may be required to join and/or pay an
equivalent service fee.
Ideal Candidate:
QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

21 years of age at time of appointment.
U.S. Citizen or resident alien and can provide proof of application for citizenship as required by California Government Code Section 1031(a).
High School Graduate from an accredited school or GED.
60 units of credit from an accredited college or two years of Military Service in lieu of college.

DESIRABLE:
Completion of an accredited college, including undergraduate and graduate degrees;
Military experience
Basic computer and word processing skills
Bilingual skills (Spanish is most prevalent, other languages also needed).

Other life experience factors, equivalent to two years of college will be reviewed individually.

NOTE:
There are also physical, psychological, and background requirements, including a stress agility assessment for appointment as a police officer.
