Witnesses and police told two different stories about Wednesday night's chase that ended with one man dead in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood.

"We have a right to not be killed by people who have the right to carry guns," said Boyd's mother Marylon Boyd. "This is sad."

Officers say the incident started when they tried to pull over Cammerin Boyd. A chase followed, and police say Boyd fired on them several times. When he finally came to a stop, officers say Boyd got out of his vehicle, sat on the running board, and then reached back in the SUV under the driver's seat.

"The officers, fearing that he was reaching for a gun as he spun around towards them, discharged their weapons," said Deputy Chief Morris Tabac of the San Francisco Police Department. "It should be noted that within hand reach of the suspect we located a hand gun."

Boyd, 29, had two prosthetic legs, and some witnesses say he was merely trying to surrender when he was shot and killed.

"The guy got out of the van and he had his hands in the air," said Angela Washington. "He was saying, 'I don't have nothing, I don't have nothing,' and he had his hands way up in the air."

Police brass, including Chief Heather Fong, met with outraged citizens at 3rd Baptist Church Thursday afternoon, to try to answer the community's questions.

Meantime, more information became available about Boyd. The Oakland Police Department arrested him Sunday for evading police, reckless driving, and driving on the wrong side of the road. The police reports say he was acting strangely and foaming at the mouth.
