SALEM (WBZ) ― A Salem liquor store clerk fended off an alleged robber who police say threatened him with a toy gun Friday night.

Salem police officials said the Loring Liquors clerk, 22-year-old Justin Phillips, realized the suspect who was trying to rob him was carrying a toy gun, so he grabbed the gun and broke it and refused to give him any money.

Police said the suspect then fled.

After giving police a description of the suspect, who police say Phillips recognized as a past customer, they arrested 24-year-old Andrew Caron.

According to police, Caron confessed to the robbery along with two other holdups in the area. Police say he confessed to two Citgo holdups in October, one on Oct. 15 and one on Oct. 22.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Caron on Nov. 19.
