Right Time to Give Egypt More F-16s?

  • The US is sending more than 20 F-16 fighter jets to Egypt as part of a $1 billion foreign aid package, but critics question plan given current unrest in the country.

The US has been the sugar daddy of the Egyptian military since the Sadat days. The military is independent of the executive and controls 40% of the economy. It's officers have close ties with our military. Even though Morsi, and the Brotherhood are not our allies, the US special relationship with the military may be our only hope in maintaining any US influence in Egypt. Egypt has always been a power player among the Arabs. It maintained semi autonomy in the Ottoman Empire and was the main force behind the UAR.

Besides it makes more sense to raise taxes on the top2% of Americans.....That will pay for these jets to go to Egypt. Oooops!o_O
I wouldn't give them the sweat off my ba__s! They're going to side with Iran against us and will use the jets to kill our troops.

Calls to pull the plug on U.S. gifts of tanks, F-16 jets to Egypt grows

Published January 10, 2013
FoxNews.com
Washington - Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan urged President Obama Thursday to stop the shipments of 20 American F-16 fighter jets and 200 Abrams tanks to Egypt. The Florida Congressman is part of a growing chorus of critics who have asked the administration to pull the plug on the $213 million deal.
"Simply put, the U.S. should not be providing military assistance to a regime that supports Hamas and is looking more and more like a dictatorship than a trustworthy democracy," Buchanan wrote in a letter dated Jan. 10.
Buchanan recently called for ending foreign aid to Egypt altogether and told FoxNews.com last month that the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government has been sending increasingly troubling signals to Washington, and giving it state-of-the-art fighter jets is a dangerous idea.

U.S. gift of F-16 fighters headed to Egypt, despite Morsi's harsh rhetoric

Four F-16 fighter jets left the U.S. this morning, bound for Egypt as part of a foreign aid package critics say should have been scrapped when the nation elected a president who has called President Obama a liar and urged that hatred of Jews be instilled in children.
A source who works on the Naval Air Force Base in Dallas confirmed the departure of the state-of-the-art fighter planes to FoxNews.com. Sixteen F-16s and 200 Abrams tanks are to be given to the Egyptian government before the end of the year under a $216 million foreign aid deal signed in 2010 with then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a longtime U.S. ally..
Critics, including several in Congress, say it doesn't make sense to follow through with the package, given that new Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, elected last summer, has given decidedly mixed signals about relations with the U.S. While he has toned down his rhetoric since his election, in 2010 - the same year the aid package was struck - Morsi attacked Obama for supporting Israel.

So long as keep our A-10's to rip apart the tanks we give them, it's cool.

The F-16's can be life fire targets for our F-22's and F-35's like the phased out F-4 Phantoms were for the F-14's and F-15's............ :D
Too bad Obama trashed the F-22 program.
Whether he gives them F-16's, F-22's, aircraft carriers or BB guns, the point is that Obama apparently values the Egyptians more than his own military. While our own country's military is going through massive cuts, he give military hardware to countries with a very shaky track record of being our "allies", and our currently filling the airwaves with anti-american and anti-Israel rhetoric.

Very true but, there's still 186 operational F-22's today.
Do they have Egyptian Air Force markings yet?

At this point, I don't see how we are in a position to give anything to anyone. So we are in the process of cutting back our own military and raising taxes so that we can help others? When are we going to help ourselves?
