RIDGEFIELD, Conn. (AP) - Ridgefield's longtime police chief, who joined the department as a part-time clerk 41 years ago, has died after a sudden illness.
Richard Ligi died Friday night. He was 60.
Ligi was appointed chief in 1999. He was particularly active in youth services, including coaching Little League and helping develop programs to combat youth substance abuse.
Ligi was the second town native to become chief in Ridgefield, a town of about 23,000 residents in western Connecticut.
The department said in a statement Saturday that Ligi died unexpectedly. They said they mourn him as a brother officer, community leader, friend and native son of Ridgefield.
The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed. Funeral arrangements are pending.
