BOSTON (AP) - A Rhode Island man is facing federal charges of bringing tons of marijuana worth millions of dollars into New England.
Jeremy Barnes, who has addresses in Tiverton and Providence, pleaded not guilty to multiple drug charges at his arraignment Monday in U.S. District Court in Boston. He is being held pending a bail hearing.
Federal prosecutors allege Barnes brought marijuana from violent Mexican drug cartels through San Diego and into Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Tiverton Detective Sgt. Charles Mulcahy says investigators estimate Barnes brought 4.5 tons of marijuana into the area based on ledgers found in his apartment.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines.
