BOSTON -- A Revere man has pleaded guilty in federal court to using threats to collect debts for the illegal gambling ring he helped run.
Prosecutors say 52-year-old Philip Puopolo pleaded guilty on Thursday to 14 felony counts, including participating in a racketeering enterprise, using extortion to collect alleged debts and operating illegal gambling businesses.
Authorities also allege that Puopolo operated illegal video poker machines at the Revere Businessman's Association, a private club in the city.
Puopolo has agreed to a sentence of nearly four years in prison and a $10,000 fine, while promising restitution of $4,000 to one victim and the forfeiture of nearly $10,000. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 18.
