Drug suspect recaptured after running from Mich. police car
The Associated Press

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- A woman suspected of cocaine possession escaped from a police cruiser early Monday, but was recaptured within an hour.

Theejauna D. Martin, 26, was arrested about 5 a.m. While being taken to jail, she complained of being hot and getting sick, so an officer lowered the cruiser's rear window, Grand Rapids police said in a statement.
Just before the cruiser arrived at the Kent County Correctional Facility, Martin somehow slipped her handcuffed hands from back to front, reached through the open window to unlock the cruiser's rear door and ran off, police said. An officer gave chase but lost her in nearby woods.

About an hour later, retired Grand Rapids officer Gary Roelofs, who had heard Martin's description on his car radio, saw her at a restaurant and called police, who recaptured her.

Martin was jailed on charges of cocaine possession, escape and attempted resisting and obstructing a police officer.

This is a great example of how retired officers still can get the job done. I am all for departments allowing retirees to remain on the force in some capacity if they choose (special officers, part-time, reserve). If officers get on the job in their early 20's they could be out at 55yrs old, give or take a few years. Certainly have a lot to offer with their experience to younger officers, even from a part-time capacity. Just my two cents.
