CHICAGO -- A man reputed to be one of Chicago's most feared mob enforcers has died while awaiting trial on conspiracy charges.
Frank "The German" Schweihs (shwys) was 78 and had cancer and had been in federal custody for more than two years. He died Wednesday night after being taken from a Chicago federal lockup to a hospital.
Law enforcement officials say Schweihs specialized in beatings and murders and they had hoped to send him to prison for life.
Prosecutors are not saddened by the death. As one puts it, "We have one less brutal and cowardly outfit enforcer to worry about."
Schweihs was to be tried alongside five others in a conspiracy proceeding last fall. But he was deemed to ill to take part.
The indictment charged that the conspiracy included 18 long unsolved mob murders.
