REHOBOTH - Selectmen have decided to postpone the selection of a new police chief because of budget problems.

The board has been reviewing applications for the position and 12 candidates were selected and contacted by the town administrator.

The board was expected to discuss scheduling personal interviews with the candidates at Monday's meeting when Selectman Frederick 'Skip' Vadnais suggested postponing the process to after Sept. 29 - the date selectmen chose Monday night for the special town meeting - in light of the failure of the recent Proposition 2 1/2 override election on July 22.

"Until we get through the special town meeting, I feel we would be remiss in continuing this project," Vadnais said.

"Drastic times require drastic measures," he added. Vadnais noted that towns sometimes keep an acting chief in place for many months. He said the town was lucky to have a competent individual in Acting Chief Lt. Michael Brady. Brady has been serving as acting chief since selectmen decided to not renew Norman Miranda's contract at the end of June.

"I think things are running fairly well on an interim basis," Vadnais said.
