The City of Redding Police Department has a reputation as a progressive agency offering excellent training and career development programs and providing our officers with excellent, modern equipment. With a force of 113 sworn officers, and 19 community service officers, we have implemented an effective Community Oriented Policing Program.

Recruit - High school diploma or equivalent, 30 semester college units with concentration in Police Science preferred, or another related major; 60 semester college units desirable. California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment. Satisfactory completion of medical examination after an offer of employment and before the start date. Successful completion of a psychological evaluation, personal background investigation, polygraph examination, and substance use test.

Entry: The above requirements for recruit and California P.O.S.T. academy at time of appointment; less than one year of "street" experience. Date of academy certification or date completed update course must be indicated on employment application.

Lateral: The above requirements for recruit and currently working with another law enforcement agency or meet California P.O.S.T. standards for Police Officer, (not separated from employment as a Police Officer for more than one year,) completed probation, and have at least one year "street" experience.

"Street" experience must be with a municipality, Sheriff's Office or equivalent. Applicants with custodial (jail) experience only will be tested as entry level.

The City conducts recruitments throughout the year to maintain an active pool of eligible candidates. Separate eligibility lists are established for each of the various categories listed above.
