PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Rhode Island National Guard unit is guarding the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

About 100 members of the Guard’s 43rd Military Police Brigade are guarding Abu Ghraib and two other prisons in Iraq. The unit is commanded by Brigadier General Kevin McBride of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He tells The Providence Journal that prisoners receive medical care, three meals a day and are treated with “dignity and respect.”

The Guard members are not involved in interrogating prisoners. Abu Ghraib exploded in the news when pictures showed U-S soldiers degrading prisoners.

McBride says photographic equipment is no longer allowed in the prisons guarded by his troops, and that superiors are watching how prisoners are treated.
