QUINCY -
Police say a young Quincy man remains in stable condition today at Boston Medical Center after been stabbed four times when two groups of youths got into a fight on Billings Street in North Quincy.
The name of the victim was not released by police. One person was in custody for obstruction, but there has been no arrest for the stabbing itself.
Police responded about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to a call about a fight at 26 Billings Street involving groups of youths, some apparently from Boston and some from Quincy.
Quincy Police Lt. Jack Sullivan said officers arriving saw a dozen or more youths, late teens to early 20s, leaving the scene.
According to Sullivan:
Motorcycle officer Jamie Greene stopped two youths after they made repeated attempts to avoid him.
The youths gave inconsistent statements about why they were in the neighborhood and what they were doing One of the young men was Kevin Taylor of Boston, and Greene notice that his hands were shaking.
The two youths said they had been playing basketball, but Greene noted their sneakers were untied, they had on jeans and did not have a basketball.
Greene heard on a police radio that Taylor, one of the youths he was talking with, had been a witness at the stabbing. He placed him under arrest after another witness confirmed Taylor was present at the time of the stabbing.
Sullivan said Taylor was charged with witness interference and obstruction of justice, a felony charge. He was not charged with the stabbing itself, and Sullivan said there were no suspects in the stabbing at this time.
Taylor was held overnight before appearing in Quincy District Court on Friday.
Sullivan said the police reports do not indicate whether the fighting started inside 26 Billings Street or was exclusively on the street.
Sullivan said police did not know yet why the young men were fighting or why the victim was stabbed. He said the two groups knew each other and it was not a a case of random street violence.
