CONCORD, N.H. -- A second former Merrimack County jail guard has been acquitted of assaulting an inmate, but jail officials said he is not getting his job back.

A jury found Salvatore Mills, of Gilmanton, N.H., not guilty on Friday, about a month after fellow guard Barry Lee, of Tilton, N.H., was acquitted of similar charges.

Police said Mills held an inmate's head while Lee sprayed him with pepper spray.
The men were fired after jail officials conducted an internal investigation. Sheriff Scott Hilliard said there is evidence Mills and Lee abused their authority, but attorneys for the two men said they were properly restraining inmates.
