Fall River -
Three people were arrested and one man was shocked with a Taser during a disturbance in the Corky Row neighborhood Wednesday, police said. The man's mother and another woman also were arrested when they allegedly interfered with police during his arrest.
Jay Thompson, 30, of 427 Fifth St., is charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
His mother, Debra Thompson, 54, also of Fifth Street, and Tracy DaCosta, 40, of 527 Fourth St., are each charged with interfering with a police officer, disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct. Debra Thompson also is charged with three counts of assault and battery on a police officer.
Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Bernier said Officer Michael Pessoa responded to a domestic dispute at the Fifth Street address about 4:30 a.m.
Debra Thompson told police that when she tried to take a video game system away from her son, he allegedly punched her in the face and kicked her in the chest, Bernier said. He fled the area and a warrant was secured for his arrest.
About 7 a.m., Pessoa was sent back to Fifth Street for an "unwanted party" complaint. Officers Matthew Mendes and Christopher Gibson had Jay Thompson under arrest on the warrant. Police said Thompson's mother and aunt told them to remove him from the premises, Bernier said.
Jay Thompson allegedly spat in Pessoa's face, and kicked Pessoa and Mendes as they placed him the back of a cruiser, Bernier said.
Pessoa deployed his Taser, but it failed to shock the suspect, Bernier said. Pessoa then used his Taser twice on the suspect to be "successful in getting him under control," Bernier said.
Several people, mostly family members, came outside and were "trying to get Pessoa to stop Tasing Thompson," Bernier said.
About a dozen people interfered with the arrest, he said. Debra Thompson allegedly struck Pessoa on the back with her fists, and is accused of hitting Mendes and Gibson as they tried to control the situation.
"Several more cruisers responded and police gained control of the unruly crowd," Bernier said.
DaCosta was arrested after she yelled at police.
"Officers viewed her as attempting to incite the crowd again," Bernier said.
Jay Thompson was taken to St. Anne's Hospital to be checked, in keeping with departmental policy for anyone who is shocked by a Taser.
