FITCHBURG -- A convenience store clerk with a baseball bat stopped a masked man with a knife from robbing her store Sunday morning, according to Fitchburg Police Capt. Philip Kearns.
"I guess (the bat) caused the guy to change his mind," Kearns said.
A suspect with a black bandanna covering his face entered JD's Variety Store on Franklin Street around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
The mask raised the suspicions of the woman behind the counter.
"She said to herself, 'It's not that cold outside,' " the woman's husband told the Sentinel & Enterprise on Monday.
We are not revealing his name to protect his wife's identity.
The clerk told the suspect to take the mask off, but he refused. He then pulled out a knife and demanded all the money in the cash register, the clerk's husband said.
The clerk pretended to reach down to the cash drawer, her husband said, but grabbed the bat instead.
She then swung the aluminum baseball bat down onto the counter and told the suspect to leave, her husband said.
"We never had to use the bat before," he said.
The suspect did not immediately leave, so the clerk threw a pair of scissors at him, her husband said.
"She was scared," her husband said.
The suspect fled the store and got into a dark blue sport utility vehicle. Kearns said the car is likely a Ford Explorer.
A man matching the suspect's description robbed the Sunoco gas station on Electric Avenue on Saturday morning, Kearns said. The suspect pointed a 12-inch steak knife at the stomach of the female clerk and demanded all the money, Kearns said. The suspect got away with about $170, Kearns said.
Police believe the two robberies are connected, Kearns said.
