A Rhode Island man faces battery charges after he tried to close a car door on a woman by driving into a tree near the Sherborn line yesterday morning, police said.
Samuel Curalov, 51, of 86 Meadow Road, North Providence, R.I., was arrested about 10:17 a.m., and faces two counts of domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as a charge of driving to endanger, police said.
According to police Lt. Paul Shastany, Curalov, along with a female passenger, was driving from Sherborn into Framingham near Blandin Avenue around 10 a.m., when an off-duty paramedic saw Curalov repeatedly strike the woman in the front passenger seat. The paramedic called police on a cell phone.
As this went on for several minutes, Curalov's car swerved back and forth along the road with the passenger door open, said Shastany.
"On several occasions, she appeared to try to exit the car while (it was) in motion," said Shastany, who noted the woman managed to get her feet outside the car.
Curalov then tried to strike a tree along the road, apparently intending to slam the door closed on her feet. She pulled her feet in and he didn't hit anything. Police intercepted the car at the corner of Blandin Avenue and Beaver Street.
Though the victim said nothing was wrong, police had the paramedic as a witness, said Shastany.
Curalov's two battery charges stemmed from using his hands and the car door, said Shastany. Curalov was also ticketed for the driving charge, said Shastany.
