Police say a 22-year-old Lawrence man swallowed a bag full of heroin when officers were closing down on him in North Tewksbury on Thursday.
Then, he started choking.
"He was gasping for air and had his hands at his throat," a detective, who asked to remain unnamed, wrote in court documents. "The female operator (of his car) was yelling and screaming: 'Help my husband!' "
As Rogelio Gracia-Fegueroa knelt on a Hood Road lawn, the detective and other responding officers went to work.
They applied back blows, chest thrusts and the Heimlich maneuver.
Finally, Gracia-Fegueroa "spat up a large clear bag of a brown powdery substance" that later turned out to be heroin, the detective wrote.
"This incident adds evidence that dealing drugs can be potentially hazardous to one's health," Deputy Police Chief Tim Sheehan quipped.
"We are extremely proud of the performance of all of the officers and investigators involved in this battle," he added. "They are true warriors dedicated to keeping the community that they serve safe and drug-free."
The detective was led to Gracia-Fegueroa by a white car that he deemed suspicious during a surveillance operation at an Andover Street gas station. He followed the car onto Trull Road and then Cleghorn Lane, where he said the driver met up with Gracia-Fegueroa, who was a passenger in a Ford Taurus driven by a woman.
"I had reason to believe a narcotic transaction was being conducted," he wrote. "After the occupants of the vehicles observed me, they fled the area. I was unable to locate the white vehicle."
But the detective caught up with the Taurus on River Road and followed it onto Hood Road, where Gracia-Fegueroa stumbled out of the car.
After his airway was cleared, he was taken to Saints Medical Center in Lowell to be evaluated by a doctor. Once released, he was booked at the Tewksbury Police Station.
Gracia-Fegueroa faces charges of possessing heroin with intent to distribute and conspiring to violate narcotics laws. Police say they recovered 5 grams of heroin and $736 in cash from Gracia-Fegueroa.
The woman who had been driving the Taurus, 24-year-old Yahaira Rodriguez, will be summonsed into court. Police believe she conspired with Gracia-Fegueroa in planning the alleged drug exchange.
