Authorities were investigating the death of an inmate yesterday at the South Bay House of Correction, authorities told the Herald.
"It appears to be inmate-on-inmate violence," said Peter Van Delft, a spokesman for the Suffolk sheriff.
The death was reported at 4:55 p.m.

Dead inmate had a violent history

A 25-year-old man who died in South Bay House of Correction after an "altercation with another inmate" was doing time on drug and assault convictions and had a lengthy criminal record of similar offenses, authorities said.
The death Sunday of Alexander Callahan, 25, of West Roxbury is being investigated by the Boston Police Department as well as the Suffolk district attorney's office. No one has been charged in his death. Conley's office would not provide details regarding Callahan's death, which authorities are calling a "death investigation."
"The investigation is active and ongoing," said Conley's spokesman Jake Wark.
