Chase Ends In Crash, Arrests

HARTFORD, Conn. -- A man driving what police said was a vehicle taken in a carjacking, rammed a Hartford police officer with the vehicle early Saturday morning.

Police said. Sgt. Felix Ortiz was driving west on Farmington Avenue at about 2 a.m. when he saw a vehicle that was reported stolen Friday night.

Ortiz called for backup, and he and other officers called to the scene, stopped the car at a traffic light, police said. Ortiz got out of his cruiser and ordered the driver to turn off the car's engine with his gun drawn, police said.

Police said the driver put the car in reverse, ramming a police cruiser before pulling forward and striking Ortiz. Police said Ortiz fired a single shot in the direction of the driver.
The car then fled west on Farmington Avenue before crashing into a fence near Lorraine Street, police said.

Police said several people who were inside the car fled on foot, and four people were taken into police custody. Police said the car's occupants were suspected in a carjacking.

Among those arrested was Gamalier Rivera, of Hartford, who was charged with larceny, reckless endangerment, attempted assault, assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, engaging police in pursuit, interfering with an officers, operating without a license and evading respolsibility.

The extent of Ortiz's injuries remains unknown.
