An 18-year-old Marlborough man arrested Friday has been growing marijuana plants in his apartment, police said.
Renato F. Guerra, of 19 Chestnut St., was arrested at his apartment, police said. He was charged with possession of a Class D drug and cultivation of a Class D drug, police said.
Police went to Guerra's apartment at about 12:30 p.m. to serve arrest warrants, said Detective Sgt. Stephen McCurley. Guerra was also charged on the six warrants.
Similar drug charges are pending against another man who was in the apartment, McCurley said.
Guerra was hiding in the bathroom when police got to his apartment, McCurley said. There was evidence, including an odor, that the men had been smoking, and marijuana could be seen throughout the apartment, McCurley said.
Police received a search warrant and later discovered the plants in a closet, McCurley said.
"They had the closet rigged up with grow lights, fans and heaters to grow the marijuana plant," he said.
McCurley said he would not comment about any apparent prior activity at the Chestnut Street apartment.
Guerra, who also lists an address at 34 Dogwood Road, Hubbardston, was arraigned in Marlborough District Court on Monday, according to court documents. He was released on $1,000 bail and has a pretrial hearing on Nov. 13.
The warrants came from Marlborough, Worcester and Clinton district courts. Most of the charges were for motor vehicle violations, McCurley said. Other charges are for intimidation of a witness and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
