Fall River -

Police arrested a Westport man on charges of attempted murder after he allegedly attacked another man with a machete in a Corky Row apartment Friday night.
Robert J. Sylvia, 21, of 1399 Drift Road, Westport, is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, mayhem, domestic assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said Officer Keith Strong responded to 668 Third St. about 11:45 p.m. for a reported stabbing and found a man bleeding from the right side of his face and a "deep wound" to his left hand.
Witnesses said the assailant ran from the scene. The victim, 21, of Norton, was taken by ambulance to St. Anne's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Mauretti said the suspect, known to the victim, was among several people in the apartment when the victim accidentally struck Sylvia with a key chain.
Sylvia became "agitated," Mauretti related, went to a bedroom, got a machete from a bag of his belongings and "started yelling that he was going to kill the victim."
The suspect "began to wildly swing the machete," cutting the victim's face, Mauretti said. As the victim tried to protect himself, he suffered the hand wound.
Sylvia's girlfriend was cut on her right knee when Sylvia drew the machete from its sheath and accidentally "nicked" her, Mauretti said. "She pleaded for him to stop, but he pushed her out of the way," he added.
After the suspect's description was broadcast, Officer Brian Saurette arrested Sylvia, walking on Eastern Avenue with blood on his face.
