Police investigate a robbery at the Banknorth on Franklin Street in Framingham yesterday.

FRAMINGHAM - A brazen and strangely dressed man robbed two banks yesterday in a span of just a few minutes, police said.

The suspect first robbed TD Banknorth at 440 Franklin St. around 3:50 p.m. He then hit Citizens Bank at Hamilton Plaza on Main Street about 15 minutes later, police said.

"It appears we're dealing with the same bandit for two robberies," police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said. "I've never seen it happen this close together."

The suspect first passed a note demanding money from a teller at the Franklin Street bank, Shastany said.

While police were investigating that robbery, the Citizens Bank was robbed, again by a man passing a note. The two banks are less than a mile from each other.

"It's pretty much a straight shot," Shastany said.

As a precaution, police alerted other banks about the robberies.

The suspect was described as a white man, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a scruffy beard.

More than anything, it was the man's outfit that stood out, Shastany said.

The man wore a long, white lab coat, a white March of Dimes hat, a white shirt, a dark tie and Gucci sunglasses.

The man did not show a weapon, and no one was injured. Police did not say how much money he got away with.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call Detective Darren Crawford at 508-532-5923, ext. 4215.
