Job Description

The position of Lieutenant performs and provides direct supervision, support, and backup of police sergeants, police and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities.
  • Manages a unit or shift; insures adequate resources for area(s) of responsibility; performs background investigations for potential employees.
  • Maintains data, files and information related to unit; conducts research; prepares proposals and plans for strategic and contingency needs. Prepares data for presentation at Compstat meetings and conducts investigations of crime reports.
  • Trains and retrains personnel as necessary. Monitors and tracks WCPPS Staff license and certification expirations and communicate expiration dates accordingly. Coordinates with Department leadership mandated training requirements and track the progress of enrolled members during all phases of the program. Obtains copies of program certificates and request the same to support complete and accurate personnel files. Coordinates and updates training schedules and reserves training spaces accordingly. Researches and requests training materials from internal and external personnel; for example, instructor biographies, lesson plans, presentations, handouts and any other course materials from instructors/courses. Collects and files accordingly all relevant training materials to include class rosters, sign-in forms, tests and evaluations/surveys. Updates trainee files upon completion of training.
  • Prepares, reviews and approves police reports. Conducts analysis of information and formulates reports of trends through review of incident reports and statistical data.
  • Performs and provides routine audits of operational processes and functions as well as inspections of personnel and equipment to insure compliance.
  • Conducts investigations of complaints/allegations of employee misconduct; makes recommendation to management when disciplinary action is warranted and issues applicable corrective action in accordance with Wellesley College and Departmental policies.
  • Participates and attends regular meetings with key staff across the institution to keep current and aware of changing demands relative to security and law enforcement needs within a designated area of responsibility. Compiles and presents reports as required for committees and meetings. Prepares and submits reports/data/records for local and/or state compliance.
  • Keeps management informed of significant police related events or activities; prepares and reviews periodic activity reports for management. Participates and provides input in periodic management meetings to keep top management informed of problems and concerns.
  • Monitors and coaches others for improved work performance and participates in counseling sessions as necessary. Supervises assigned subordinates.

Performance Evaluation System
  • Ability to implement and maintain measures to ensure effective control and integrity of property and evidence in the custody of Wellesley College. Emergency Services
  • Coordinates resources and information related to the overall emergency preparedness for the institution. Provides input for contingency planning.
Crime Prevention
  • Coordinates programs, seminars and security risk assessments for the college/institution.
Special Events and Assignments
  • May be assigned or assume police supervisory or command responsibilities during special events on campus, visiting dignitary details, and other assignments as necessary.
  • Serves as a resource to officers investigating traffic crashes, investigating criminal acts, monitoring psychiatric patients and other events/incidents requiring police or security intervention.
  • Assumes command and control as necessary for major incidents and insures implementation of incident command at critical incidents.
Position Responsibilities:

Basic Qualifications:
  • All candidates must have at least 8 years working as a police officer in a campus or university setting.
  • Successful candidates must have at least 10 years of progressive and broad-based experience in directing and overseeing daily shift responsibilities and assignments in a Police setting or a Bachelor's Degree with 7 years law enforcement experience.
  • All candidates must have attended and successfully completed a police academy approved by the Massachussets Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission allowing them to be licensed as a State Special Police Officer under Massachusetts General Law C. 22c Sec. 63.
  • If diploma is from an out-of-state academy, transcripts of academy curriculum must also be submitted. Must be certifiable under Massachusetts General Law C. 22c Sec. 63, have or obtain a valid Massachusetts's driver's license prior to employment, be able to pass a physical exam and psychological evaluation, a rigid background investigation and hold a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • All applicants must be at least twenty one (21) years of age, be a citizen of the United States, not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances, not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States, and have the person's fingerprints on file with the Massachusetts Bureau of Investigation.

  • Proven clerical and technical capacity to include multiple platforms. Ability to communicate across levels of staff. Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong knowledge of training equipment and presentation software to include Excel, Adobe, Word, and Publisher.
