MUMBAI, India -- Police shot and killed an armed man who tried to commandeer a bus in India's financial capital on Monday, while demanding to speak with a fiery politician who has been stirring up anger against migrant workers.
The man, who boarded a Mumbai bus, first fired his gun in the air and tied up the bus conductor, demanding to speak to the politician, Raj Thackeray. When the bus crew stopped the vehicle and called police, the man fired at a passenger, wounding him in the leg, said Uttam Ghadey, a senior official in the bus company.
Police then surrounded the bus and after a short negotiation shot the man, who died on his way to the hospital, said police officer Mohammed Javed.
The wounded passenger was taken to a local hospital, he said. It was not immediately clear how many other passengers were on the bus at the time.
Javed identified the gunman as Rahul Raj, 23, from northern state of Bihar.
Tension has been building up for nearly two weeks in Mumbai since Thackeray's supporters attacked students from northern India, many of them from Bihar, who had traveled to Mumbai to apply for jobs on the railways.
There have been retaliatory attacks in Bihar, where trains passing through were set on fire last week.
Thackeray, the founder of the hard-line Maharashtra Reconstruction Party, has made his name as a xenophobic, rabble-rousing politician championing the Marathi language and the rights of locals in Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital. Some 37 percent of Mumbai's 18 million people are migrants drawn to the city's bright lights seeking jobs.
