NORTH ANDOVER - A 15-year-old North Andover male has been arrested and charged with stabbing a man nearly twice his age on Main Street Sunday night.
Christopher Howard, 28, of 36 May St., was in critical condition and fighting for his life last night in Lawrence General Hospital, police said.
Investigators yesterday were trying to find a motive for the stabbing.
Police Chief Richard Stanley declined to confirm or deny that Howard was stabbed when he tried to intervene in a dispute between the boy and his 15-year-old girlfriend.
Howard was stabbed "numerous" times in the torso about 9:15 p.m., and lay on the sidewalk in front of the fire station at 124 Main St. calling for help, police said.
Detective Lt. Paul Gallagher said yesterday the stabbing appeared to stem from a disturbance "between some people who knew each other."
The street is lined with shops, small businesses and offices. St. Michael Parish is within walking distance.
Firefighters told police they heard someone pleading for help outside their headquarters.
Stanley went to the scene to take charge of the investigation due to the seriousness of the injuries to Howard, police said.
Officers with flashlights and Sgt. Charles Gray and his police dog Kyzer searched the area, which was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape Sunday night.
