Police force brings back traditional bobby's whistle to control students

It's historic buildings are already a favourite with tourists eager to step
back in time.

Now visitors to the university city of Cambridge will be able to experience
another blast from the past after the reintroduction of the police whistle.

Whistles were last heard on the streets in the 1970s after nearly 150
years of history that stretched from Sir Robert Peel's 'Bobbies' in the
1820s to TV favourite Dixon of Dock Green.

But today's police in central Cambridge believe they are the most effective
way of attracting the attention of erring pedestrians and cyclists.

Officers will also come to the aid of a colleague when they hear the
piercing shrill summons - although critics pointed out there are so few
constables on the streets these days it is unlikely it would be noticed.
