FITCHBURG -- An off-duty Department of Public Works employee helped stop a pair of Worcester men from stealing equipment from the Route 12 highway construction site, Fitchburg Police Capt. Philip Kearns said.

The off-duty employee was driving past the construction yard near the Salvation Army store on Route 12, when he spotted two men loading catch basins and manhole covers into the back of a pickup about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Kearns said.
The employee called police, and responding officers found the men and questioned them about the catch basins, Kearns said.
"They didn't have any good reasons to have the catch basins in the back of their truck," Kearns said.
The catch basins and manhole covers are made from steel and copper, Kearns said.
Nicola Mastrocola, 32, of 257 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, and Michael A. Cesaitis, 29, of 25 Balis Ave., Worcester, are both charged with one count of larceny of more than $250, Kearns said. Mastrocola is free after posting $100 cash bail and Cesaitis is being held on $500 cash bail, according to court records.
