ASHBY -- An Ashby man is facing aggravated assault charges after allegedly wielding a machete at a police officer Thursday night, according to a news release from Police Chief Paul Lundin.

Thomas Paglieroni, 20, of 203 Davis Road, is charged with felony aggravated assault and resisting arrest, according to the release.
Police received an abandoned 911 call from Paglieroni's home at 7:42 p.m. Thursday night. Officer Derek Pepple responded to the home to make sure everything was all right, according to a release from Lundin.
Paglieroni met Pepple at the door of the home and allegedly began yelling at the officer, denying him entry. Paglieroni's grandfather told him to let Pepple in, according to the report. Paglieroni allegedly took a fighting stance and then ran to a bedroom, emerging with a machete, which he held in a threatening manner. Pepple then pepper-sprayed Paglieroni, causing him to run into a bathroom and lock himself inside with his grandmother.
Another Ashby officer, as well as police from Townsend and New Ipswich, responded to the apartment. Police eventually talked Paglieroni out of the bathroom and he was placed under arrest.
Pepple did an excellent job handling the situation, the chief said in the release.
"Happily we are reporting on an arrest this morning and not something more tragic," he stated in the release. Paglieroni was scheduled to appear in Ayer District Court Friday.
