Police officers responding to a car chase found themselves in the right spot at the right time Monday night when they arrested a man suspected of fleeing police who were investigating a nearby slaying in Roxbury.

Elbert Newsom, 19, of Dorchester was charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police said he fit the description of a man who fled officers investigating the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old at about 9:13 p.m. Monday in the area of 923 Parker St., but are still investigating.
In the shooting, the teenager was hit multiple times. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center and was later pronounced dead. He was not identified yesterday.
After the shooting, officers in the area of Academy Road and Dimock Street were told that a suspect was heading their way, after he fled in a motor vehicle, and then on foot. Officers set up a perimeter on Dimock Street, and soon after they observed a man matching the description of the suspect exit from a vacant lot across from 18 Notre Dame St. He was jogging, sweating, breathing heavily, and gasping for air, police said.
Officers stopped the man and conducted a search. They said they found a bag of marijuana on him. Police said they also developed information that led to a separate charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
