NEW BEDFORD - Police arrested a city man who allegedly robbed two men at gunpoint last weekend at the Lord Phillips Condominiums.
Alex R. Torres, 30, of 2094 Phillips Road, was arraigned Wednesday and is being held pending a dangerousness hearing in New Bedford District Court. Police arrested him in a Phillips Road apartment Tuesday and confiscated heroin, cash and a loaded .22 revolver in his waistband, court records said.
Mr. Torres was allegedly one of two masked men on Aug. 2 who confronted a man washing his motorcycle outside the Lord Phillips Condominiums. The suspects pointed a black revolver at the man and told him to walk to his apartment. They emptied his pockets, taking his cell phone, keys, and a gold chain with a diamond pendant.
The suspects entered the apartment building and were seen by the victim's roommate, who was told to leave by the suspects. Police said the suspects stole clothing, a leather jacket, a DVD player and an XBox video game console from the victims' apartment.
The victims reported the robbery to robbery the following day. They said they recognized one of the victims as "Alex," who lived in the same apartment complex.
Patrol Sgt. Dean Fredericks identified the suspect as Mr. Torres after speaking to witnesses, court records said. Police found his vehicle parked near the complex and saw several items inside that had been reportedly stolen from the victims' apartment.
Mr. Torres was charged with possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and conspiracy.
The identity of the second suspect has not been determined.
