NEW BEDFORD - Police on Wednesday arrested a city man who was identified as a suspect in an armed home invasion in New Bedford in May.
Jon Duane Barboza, 32, of 386 Maxfield St. was arraigned Thursday in New Bedford District Court on charges of armed assault with a firearm, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Police arrested Mr. Barboza after a victim identified him from a photo lineup as one of two men who robbed her and her husband at gunpoint in their County Street home.
The other suspect, Nicholas Gonzalez, 21, of New Bedford, was arrested within an hour of the home invasion, according to court records.
The victims told police that Mr. Barboza, an acquaintance they knew by his middle name, was in their home on May 30 and was asking about their jewelry.
Mr. Barboza allegedly called Mr. Gonzalez to meet him at the house. Mr. Gonzalez allegedly entered the residence and pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the homeowners, stole jewelry and fled, according to court records.
Within an hour, Officer Evan Bielski stopped a car near Common Park and noticed that the driver, Mr. Gonzalez, matched the victims' descriptions of the suspect. Mr. Gonzalez was wearing a gold necklace and bracelets that were stolen from the house, court records said.
Police did not find a gun in Mr. Gonzalez's possession or inside his vehicle.
In June, Mr. Barboza's name was brought to the attention of detectives by a prosecutor who informed them that Mr. Barboza had been in a recent traffic stop with a known female associate of Mr. Gonzalez, court records said.
Mr. Gonzalez is charged with armed robbery and armed assault in a dwelling. His case is still pending in New Bedford District Court.
Mr. Barboza was held on $2,000 cash bail Thursday. He is scheduled to return to court Sept. 24.
