WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Police say a fire at a southwestern Michigan home was intentionally set to cover up the shooting deaths of a mother and her two sons, and the fatal beating of a son's girlfriend.
Ottawa County sheriff's Lt. Mark Bennett said Tuesday arson caused the Sept. 29 fire in Wright Township.
Killed were 53-year-old Sharmaine Zimmer, her 20-year-old son Jeremy, her 17-year-old son Tyler and Jeremy's 18-year-old girlfriend, Katherine Brown.
Bennett said investigators have leads in the slayings, but no arrests have been made.
Wright Township is 13 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

Michigan Police Charge Man in Slaying of 4

The Associated Press

HOLLAND, Mich. --

A man was charged with murder Wednesday in the deaths of four people found in a burned house next-door to his former home.
Troy Brake, 31, of Grant, was arraigned on four open counts of murder and three firearms counts. He would get a mandatory sentence of life without parole if convicted of first-degree murder.
Authorities say the house was set on fire to cover up the killings in late September. Killed were: 53-year-old Sharmaine Zimmer; her 20-year-old son Jeremy; 17-year-old son, Tyler; and Jeremy's friend Katherine Brown, 18.
Ottawa County sheriff's Lt. Mark Bennett said the victims were killed with a .40-caliber handgun found in Brake's home. Authorities say Brake's family once lived next-door to the Zimmers, but they haven't disclosed a possible motive.
Brake has denied any involvement. He was being held without bail in the Kent County Jail on unrelated charges. The judge said a preliminary examination will be held within two weeks.
A telephone message left at the office of Brake's attorney Thomas Smith was not returned.
