Plymouth County Sheriff Election

the people who get screwed are those that work for the sheriffs depts.. the coat holders get appointments as deputies and get the prime jobs - limited inmate contact.
an example is the guard shack at plymouth county jail - they watch people enter the jail or police academy. everytime the homeland security warning system gets elevated, they man the shack 24 hrs a day getting overtime - the union fought that because only mcdonough's depu hacks were getting the big bucks for a cushy job. fairness would seem to dictate that the correction officers get to man the shack and the coat holders have to work the units as a c o for a year before they can become a deputy - i hope mcdonough gets booted out. the trouble with elected sheriffs is the that the guy who promises the most cronyism is the one who motivates his political machine to get the vote out. the average tax payer seldom gives sheriff candidates a thought.... maybe the
posistion should be appointed by the Commisioner of the Dept of Correction...

The majority of the complaints I see on this topic are incorrect. The full time correction officers who are also academy trained sworn Deputy Sheriffs have first call on all details. This is in the contract, not a wild guess by people on the outside looking in.

As for a person not being qualified to be elected to a position in government. If a person runs for Sheriff what would you have for the requirements? How about requirements for a Senator or a Governor or even the President of the United States? The simple fact is that anyone can run for any elective office in this country. The only requirement is that the person have a majority of people vote for him. If you feel that the current Sheriff is not qualified for his position, then feel free to draw out nomination papers against him, or donate yourself to any of the other candidates who are running. But to sit there and tap out on a keyboard in this forum incorrect statements is really a waste of time.

I can see that by your lighting fast deductions of who and what I do for a living based upon my posting that you must be the pride of your agency. As for myself being naive, I have been called many things by many educated people but never naive. But, I have been called many unflattering names by uneducated people who attempted to justify their actions and words with incorrect statements and name calling when the truth is not on their side.

You state that I believe nepotism and politics is acceptable in law enforcement. I would like for you to explain how you came to that conclusion based upon my postings? My postings are based upon my opinions and reality. The Office of Sheriff is an elective position in not only this state, but a majority of states in this country. You will also find that in some states that a Chief of Police is an elective position. Do you believe that the Mass. Attorney General should be removed from office also? You see the Massachusetts Attorney General is the highest law enforcement officer in this state and it is an elective position also.

Please reply to this posting with proper spelling and grammar, and with reasonable opinions and facts, not name calling and incorrect statements. You are making all of us look bad.

my problem with the current sheriff in plymouth county is that he blatantly uses county resources for personal political gain. he spent county dollars having his name put on all the sheriff dept vehicles, he had a medium sized bill board put up on the county farm with his name prominently displayed on it facing rt 3 - (not a mention that items are for sale at the farm -so what is the billboards real purpose ??), spent thousands of tax dollars to mail glossy" information" brochures about the sheriffs dept to all the homes in the county - with his picture and name mentioned numerous times, erects an illuminated stone wall, with his name on it facing the egress rd to a busy transfer station owned by the town, etc, etc... police chiefs do not use municipal resources like this - why does he plaster his name on county property ? by the way- why do some of the sheriff dept vehicles have "call 9-1-1" on them ? is he misrepresenting the sheriffs dept ? police , fire and ems do 9-1-1 in massachusetts- not the sheriffs dept...
couldn't this tax money be spent better ? previous plymouth county sheriffs did not do this, isn't it grossly unfair for an incumbant to use sheriffs dept property for advertising himself ??? i think i'll call the state ethics commission on this fireman - oops sheriff. i think the politics this guy brazenly uses to create a fiefdom are a disservice to the correction officers, the legitimate deputies, the tax payers and potential candidates who challenge him. he had his water boys holding campaign signs for him yesterday - pathetic..... did i mention that he is a democ rat ?? what a shocker.....
