Plymouth County Sheriff Election

I am a full time municipal police officer and have zero affiliation s with any sheriff's departments. i worked in the department of correction for 8 years so have empathy and respect for correction officers. with that said, i urge all officers in Plymouth County to support Joe McDONALD for Sheriff in Plymouth County. in my opinion, the present sheriff is an arrogant person who has brought nepotism and cronyism to new heights.
it's jamokes like the present sheriff that cause disrespect for sheriff department employees because all are assumed to have gotten their jobs by holding campaign signs, donating $$$ or sucking up to this arrogant jerk. Joe MCDONALD is pro police and correction officer. he is an assistant district attorney who is well liked by police officers for his level headedness, fairness and good nature. he would bring respect back to the sheriff's department and give true respect to the sheriff department employees. vote for Joe McDonald (R) and take the BS out of at l;east one sheriffs department . i am acquanted with Mr McDonald but have absolutely nothing to gain by endorsing him.

Jimbo,

Other than being an ADA, what qualifications does your friend have to be Sheriff?? Its good to see that he has a non-political agenda running for Sheriff, but just being an ADA doesn't sound to convincing. Although being a Rebublican is a step in the right direction, in and of itself :) !!!

Stay safe!!!
I also see "Palumbo"s name a lot, does anyone know his platform or history?
palombo was a civil deputy for plymouth county. got fired by the present sheriff for campaining for his opponent. trouble with him, in my opinion, is that he is on a democ rat
town commitee and is reportedly already promising jobs to the coatholders.. he would be just as bad as the present guy and the sheriff's dept would still have the same reputation for cronyism.
A firefighter got elected Sheriff, the same way a Car Salesman gets elected Sheriff: Money, power and votes. Sometimes I think that qualifications fall in dead last when electing someone in this state.

That's what we get when voters don't take their votes seriously or are uneducated about candidates...
the people who get screwed are those that work for the sheriffs depts.. the coat holders get appointments as deputies and get the prime jobs - limited inmate contact.
an example is the guard shack at plymouth county jail - they watch people enter the jail or police academy. everytime the homeland security warning system gets elevated, they man the shack 24 hrs a day getting overtime - the union fought that because only mcdonough's depu hacks were getting the big bucks for a cushy job. fairness would seem to dictate that the correction officers get to man the shack and the coat holders have to work the units as a c o for a year before they can become a deputy - i hope mcdonough gets booted out. the trouble with elected sheriffs is the that the guy who promises the most cronyism is the one who motivates his political machine to get the vote out. the average tax payer seldom gives sheriff candidates a thought.... maybe the
posistion should be appointed by the Commisioner of the Dept of Correction...

The majority of the complaints I see on this topic are incorrect. The full time correction officers who are also academy trained sworn Deputy Sheriffs have first call on all details. This is in the contract, not a wild guess by people on the outside looking in.

As for a person not being qualified to be elected to a position in government. If a person runs for Sheriff what would you have for the requirements? How about requirements for a Senator or a Governor or even the President of the United States? The simple fact is that anyone can run for any elective office in this country. The only requirement is that the person have a majority of people vote for him. If you feel that the current Sheriff is not qualified for his position, then feel free to draw out nomination papers against him, or donate yourself to any of the other candidates who are running. But to sit there and tap out on a keyboard in this forum incorrect statements is really a waste of time.

Thank you for taking the time to read my incomplete profile. I can see that by your lighting fast deductions of who and what I do for a living based upon my posting that you must be the pride of your agency. As for myself being naive, I have been called many things by many educated people but never naive. But, I have been called many unflattering names by uneducated people who attempted to justify their actions and words with incorrect statements and name calling when the truth is not on their side.

You state that I believe nepotism and politics is acceptable in law enforcement. I would like for you to explain how you came to that conclusion based upon my postings? My postings are based upon my opinions and reality. The Office of Sheriff is an elective position in not only this state, but a majority of states in this country. You will also find that in some states that a Chief of Police is an elective position. Do you believe that the Mass. Attorney General should be removed from office also? You see the Massachusetts Attorney General is the highest law enforcement officer in this state and it is an elective position also.

Please reply to this posting with proper spelling and grammar, and with reasonable opinions and facts, not name calling and incorrect statements. You are making all of us look bad.

I believe in order to run for District Attorney, you need to be an attorney. To run for Sheriff, you should need to be in law enforcement or corrections.
I could be wrong, but I am not aware that the appointed position of Commissioner of Corrections needs correctional experience. Anybody know for sure?
I was wrong. I looked it up. 5 years of adult correctional supervision is needed. It does not say anything about having been a correctional officer. I think it was Ch 27, Sec 1.

The legislature should make minimum qualifications. In Worcester, there is a former inmate running.

That, for lack of a better word, sucks.

Once any elective political office has requirements it becomes too restrictive for a majority of citizens. How can anyone run for office, if the requirements for that office are experience in that office?

This forum could go on forever about this subject. I suggest that if you have an opinion about any elective political office requirements that you contact your state representative and state senator and ask for them to rewrite the laws you don't agree with. Feel free to contact them at this URL http://www.state.ma.us/legis/legis.htm

Sitting here typing on a keyboard in this forum about matters out of our normal control is a waste of valuable time. I plan to enjoy my two days off out in the sunshine and good weather. What are you going to do?
my problem with the current sheriff in plymouth county is that he blatantly uses county resources for personal political gain. he spent county dollars having his name put on all the sheriff dept vehicles, he had a medium sized bill board put up on the county farm with his name prominently displayed on it facing rt 3 - (not a mention that items are for sale at the farm -so what is the billboards real purpose ??), spent thousands of tax dollars to mail glossy" information" brochures about the sheriffs dept to all the homes in the county - with his picture and name mentioned numerous times, erects an illuminated stone wall, with his name on it facing the egress rd to a busy transfer station owned by the town, etc, etc... police chiefs do not use municipal resources like this - why does he plaster his name on county property ? by the way- why do some of the sheriff dept vehicles have "call 9-1-1" on them ? is he misrepresenting the sheriffs dept ? police , fire and ems do 9-1-1 in massachusetts- not the sheriffs dept...
couldn't this tax money be spent better ? previous plymouth county sheriffs did not do this, isn't it grossly unfair for an incumbant to use sheriffs dept property for advertising himself ??? i think i'll call the state ethics commission on this fireman - oops sheriff. i think the politics this guy brazenly uses to create a fiefdom are a disservice to the correction officers, the legitimate deputies, the tax payers and potential candidates who challenge him. he had his water boys holding campaign signs for him yesterday - pathetic..... did i mention that he is a democ rat ?? what a shocker.....

FYI I'm old school not fresh paint, back when the only Captain you knew was named Kangaroo we called it DWI. I still run people through LEAPS too.
Huh?

What was this thread about again?
Yeah... in other threads people have questions about the LE field and if 1 or 2 posts get off track they lock it... in this thread, I'm just lost...
Off topic but....

..... Bernard B. Kerik would never have been Police Commissioners of New York City. Safir was a firefighter and Kerik was a corrections officer
Just to add some historical accuracy to this statement. Kerik was I think a Dep. Warden when he left corrections to be a NYPD street cop. He worked his way up to Det. and then worked narcotics for a while. I saw a pretty good documentary about him a while back, he definitely had a very interesting career.
