Woman rescued from burning truck after Pike crash
By Associated Press, 6/4/2003 09:57

GRAFTON, Mass. (AP) Two state troopers and a Massachusetts Turnpike maintenance foreman rescued a Worcester woman trapped in a burning pickup truck that was rapidly filling with black smoke.

Police said Linda Whitney, 49, collided with a dump truck at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday and became trapped between the driver's seat and steering wheel when the front end crumpled.

Trooper Kevin Fogwill of Brookfield was working a detail nearly and responded to the scene along with turnpike employee Steve Roberts and Trooper James Devlin.

Fogwill said he and Devlin first tried to pry open the doors with a metal bar as the engine burned and smoke filled the cab.

Fogwill said he then broke the driver's side window open with the pry bar, cut the seat belt off Whitney, turned her sideways and pulled her through the window. Roberts and Devlin then helped carry her to safety.

It was the second time in the last 11 years Fogwill has helped a trapped motorist. In 1992, he and a civilian pulled a man from the window of an oil truck that had flipped in a snow storm.

Whitney was listed in fair condition at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester on Wednesday morning.

The dump truck driver, Michael Sulfaro, was treated and released at UMass Memorial.

Police said the accident is under investigation.
